Bunyaviruses, a separate family of viruses, were once classed arboviruses because they are spread by biting insects or ticks. Bunyaviruses cause sandfly fever (pappataci fever) in Mediterranean and S.E. Asian countries. The virus is transmitted by the biting sandfly Phlebotomus papatasii. Infection leads to a three- day fever, muscle aches and pains behind the eyes. The condition is never fatal once the fever sub- sides. Magnification: x130,000 at 6x4.5cm size.
