False-colour transmission electron micrograph of rhinovirus, a virus that is one of the causes of the common cold. It may also cause other respiratory disease. It belongs in the Picornaviridae family, which is a group of small icosahedral viruses, 22 nanometres in diameter, which are sub-grouped according to their acid sensitivity. The genus rhinovirus is adapted to low temperatures but cannot invade the gut as it is readily inactivated by moderately acid conditions. The virus is spread readily in droplets from the infected nasopharynx, produced by talking, coughing, & especially sneezing. Magnification: x60,000 at 35mm size. Gold tint. Original is M055/068
