Colon adenomas. Light micrograph of a section through adenomas in the colon, part of the large intestine. Adenomas are benign (non-cancerous) tumours (neoplasms). The adenomal structures have irregularly-shaped cells that contain large or multiple nuclei (purple), surrounded by a thin layer of cytoplasm. Numerous dividing cells (mitoses) are seen. Large intestine adenomas are relatively common and occasionally symptomless. They are often discovered accidentally when a barium X-ray examination is performed for other reasons. They are not usually surgically removed unless they vastly increase in number. Magnification unknown.
