Joint disease. Coloured computed tomography (CT) scan of a knee affected by arthrosis (also called degenerative joint disease or osteoarthrosis), frontal view. This is a progressive condition causing damage to the cartilage (green, centre) and bones (red) of a joint. It is one cause of arthritis (joint inflammation). It can affect many different joints in the body. Risk factors are obesity, aging and the menopause. Activities involving repetitive movements, such as typing, sport, and construction or assembly-line work, can lead to arthrosis. Treatment is with anti-inflammatory drugs and, in severe cases, surgery.
