Bile duct cancer. Coloured cholangiogram (X-ray) of part of a common bile duct (pink, upper centre to lower right) affected by a carcinoma. This cancer is known as a cholangiocarcinoma. The duct is held open by a stent (a wire-mesh tube), while the spine (orange) and the ribs (pink) are also seen. The common bile duct transports bile, which aids fat digestion, from the gall bladder to the small intestine. Cholangiocarcinoma, which results in jaundice and weight loss, is treated by excision. A contrast medium has been injected into the duct to make it visible in the X-ray.
