Ulcer of the eye. Mooren's ulcer or peripheral ulcerative keratitis (PUK) of the eye is a rare chronic inflammation of the cornea, which causes corneal thinning. The ulcer progresses from the periphery of the eye towards the centre and is intensely painful. In some patients, Mooren's ulcer is associated with autoimmune problems, whereby it is the patient's own immune response that is destroying the cornea. There is evidence that Mooren's ulcer is provoked by certain diseases including hepatitis C and herpes simplex. Treatment may be possible by using aggressive steroids and/or immunosuppressive chemotherapy.
