Systemic lupus erythematosus. Ophthalmoscope view of the retina of a patient's eye suffering from systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). The optic disc, or blind spot, is clearly visible (yellow, at right). Red blood vessels and nerves enter the eye from this point. The macula, the most light- sensitive region of the eye can be seen as a dark spot at centre-left. SLE has caused extensive damage to this retina, seen as white patches particularly around the macula. Haemorrhaging blood vessels are also seen (at upper right). SLE is an autoimmune disorder where the immune system attacks bodily tissues, causing inflammation. This may have fatal results.
