Watermelon stomach. Gastroscope (endoscope) view of a striped watermelon stomach, or gastric antral vascular ectasia (GAVE). Red stripes are seen radiating from the lower opening (pylorus, upper centre) of the stomach. These are due to dilated veins in the stomach lining which periodically leak blood. This may cause anaemia, haematemesis (vomiting blood) and melaena (blood in the faeces). The bleeding can be treated with a laser, which can be aimed at the affected area through an endoscope.
