Angioedema (angioneurotic oedema) affecting a man's lips. This is an allergic reaction, similar to urticaria, characterised by swelling of soft tissue in the mouth, larynx and other areas. The most common cause is a sudden allergic reaction to certain foods, such as eggs, strawberries or seafood. Less common causes include drugs (such as penicillin), insect bites, infection, emotional stress and pollen. It mostly affects young people in their 20s and those with a tendency towards allergies. Angioedema can cause difficulty with speaking and breathing, potentially blocking the windpipe. Treatment is with anti-inflammatory drugs.
