Stretch marks (stria) on the abdomen of a woman. Stretch marks are due to thinning and loss of elasticity of the dermis, the lower layer of the skin. They commonly develop in pregnant women, and can occur during growth spurts and in the obese. It is thought that they can be caused by high levels of corticosteroid hormones in the blood. There is no treatment for the condition, but it causes no physical harm.
