The resulting image is used to diagnose internal injuries or disorders. Because X-rays are potentially harmful to dividing cells, the rest of the patient's body is protected from the X-ray source. The radiographer operates the machinery from a shielded area of the room. X-rays are electromagnetic waves of a short wavelength that penetrate soft tissues and are absorbed by bones.
