At right, the optician looks into the eyepiece of this illuminating ophthalmic microscope, to examine the interior of the patient's eye. The instrument directs a fine beam of light into the eye and magnifying lenses allow the optician to explore the spot where the beam falls. Some serious eye disorders, such as glaucoma, are symptomless in the early stages and can only be detected through this type of examination of the eyes.
