MODEL RELEASED. Heimlich manoeuvre. Choking girl having the Heimlich manoeuvre performed on her. This procedure is used to dislodge an obstruction in the casualty's throat. The first aider (rear) makes a fist, and places it below the victim's breastbone (sternum). She then grasps the fist with her other hand, and makes a quick hard thrust upwards and inwards. This abdominal thrust will force air out of the lungs, hopefully expelling the blockage from the throat. If this fails, emergency medical help should be sought.
