Experimental form of cancer treatment using hyperthermia (heat treatment). This Selectotherm machine, developed by Manfred von Ardenne at the Dresden institute, East Germany, uses radio waves to treat malignant tumours. In the early 1960's, it was discovered that cancerous cells were more susceptible to retardation & destruction by heat than normal tissue. Von Ardenne has incorporated hyperthermia treatment in a controversial multi-step cancer therapy", which involves conditioning the cancer cells by acidification (to supposedly restrict the tumour's blood supply) before raising the body temperature to 104 degrees F. & the tumour to 108.5 F."
