Diabetic self-injecting insulin into his abdomen before going to bed. This patient uses Ultratard" (a human insulin) injected every 24 hours. Before each meal, he supplements this dose with a smaller novopen injection. Insulin is a pancreatic hormone which controls carbohydrate and sugar metabolism. Carbohydrates occur in the blood as glucose, and insulin promotes glucose absorption into the liver and muscle cells. People with diabetes mellitus suffer a deficiency of insulin; they require regular insulin injections to lower their blood glucose levels. Ultratard is a human insulin (not obtained from animals) and is manufactured biosyn- thetically by genetic engineering."
