The X-ray plate (attached to the end of the yellow rod) is being held inside the patient's closed mouth. X-rays will be passed through the adjacent teeth to expose the plate. This allows the diagnosis of dental conditions, such as cavities, in a localised area and without the excessive use of X-rays.
