The infant is suffering from hylaine membrane disease, also known as respiratory distress syndrome, a condition in which the lungs do not expand properly. Respiratory distress syndrome arises due to a lack of surfactant substance in the lungs & results in intensely laboured, shallow breathing. Surfactant is a wetting agent that is secreted by cells lining the air sacs in the lungs. Biopsy examination reveals the presence of hyaline material in the collapsed air sacs of the lungs.
