Paediatric healthcare. Nurse and doctor checking a child's lung X-ray. The child has the bacterial infection MRSA. This is a drug-resistant form of the bacterium Staphylococcus aureus, specifically methicillin-resistant S. aureus, though bacteria can develop resistance to many different drugs. S. aureus normally only causes minor skin infections in healthy people, but infections can spread through open sores and wounds to infect the blood, bones and the lungs. MRSA-specific drugs are used to treat the infection. Drug-resistant strains are more common in hospitals, and strict hygiene and a warning label (yellow) help prevent further infections. Photographed in Thailand.
