Infected Fallopian tube. Endoscope view of an infected and inflamed Fallopian tube (bright red). Such a tubal inflammation is called salpingitis. It is caused by a bacterial infection. The ovary (white) of this Fallopian tube is also seen. The infection may have spread from the vagina or uterus, and may spread further to the peritoneum, the membrane lining the abdominal cavity. Severe cases of salpingitis may result in infertility as the Fallopian tubes can be blocked by scar tissue. Salpingitis is treated with antibiotic drugs.
