Enlarged prostate gland. Artwork of a prostate gland (brown, lower centre) in a case of benign prostatic hypertrophy. This is where the gland enlarges due to an increase in the size of its cells. Here, the most growth is seen at right. The enlarged gland is pressing into the wall of the bladder (upper centre) and narrowing the urethra (tube leading out of the bladder). The passage of urine (yellow drops in bladder) may be impeded by this effect. The bladder's two ureters (upper left and right) are also seen, as is the base of the penis (bottom). Treatment of severe cases of prostate enlargement involves surgical removal of the prostate gland.
