Polio victim. Ancient Egyptian carving showing a priest with a shrivelled leg typical of a recovered case of paralytic poliomyelitis (polio). Polio is an infectious disease caused by polioviruses that can permanently damage parts of the nervous system. In some cases, as seen here, it can cause paralysis. This bas-relief was carved in around 1500 BC.
