Healthy foot. Coloured X-ray of a foot on tiptoe seen from the side. Bones (orange) and soft tissues (pale yellow) are visible. The largest bone of the foot, the heel bone (calcaneus), is at lower left. It is one of the seven tarsal bones that form the ankle and rear of the foot. The talus (lower centre, above the heel bone), another of the tarsal bones, articulates with the tibia (shin bone). The smaller leg bone, the fibula, is also seen. The elongated metatarsals join the tarsal bones to the phalanges (toes). Here the toes are carrying all of the body's weight. The foot serves as a support for the weight of the body and as a lever during movement.
