Throat muscles. Artwork of the anatomy of the hyoid bone musculature. The hyoid bone (yellow, upper centre) sits at the base of the tongue, just above the larynx (voice box). Between the hyoid and the mandible (jaw, top) are the suprahyoid muscles. At left is the mylohyoid and at right is the stylohyoid. These muscles are elevators, raising the floor of the mouth and the hyoid bone during swallowing and lowering the mandible. Between the hyoid and clavicle (collarbone, bottom) are the infrahyoid muscles. They are, from top left to right, the sternohyoideus, thyrohyoid and omohyoideus. These muscles are depressors, lowering the hyoid and larynx during swallowing.
