Cartilage. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of articular hyaline cartilage covering the end of a long bone. Cartilage is a type of connective tissue consisting of cells called chondrocytes, embedded in an intercellular matrix which they synthesise and secrete. Hyaline cartilage is characterised by a translucent matrix and is mainly found in the walls of conducting airways and in the joint areas. In the latter case it is referred to as articular hyaline cartilage which, thanks to its smooth and slippery surface, enables movement of the joints. Magnification: x10 at 6x7cm size.
