Female reproductive organs, endoscope view. These organs are found in the lower abdomen. The uterus (pink, upper centre) has two Fallopian tubes that lead down to right and left towards the ovaries. The pair of ovaries (white, bottom right and lower left) are attached to the uterus by ligaments. The ovaries release the mature female reproductive cells (ova, eggs). As part of a monthly cycle, a single egg passes to the uterus along a Fallopian tube. If the egg is fertilised, it may implant in the wall of the uterus and develop into a foetus. Otherwise, it is discharged from the body, along with the internal uterine lining, in a process called menstruation.
