Female reproductive organs. Artwork of sectioned female reproductive organs within the abdomen. The vagina (lower centre) is a ribbed muscular canal that terminates internally at the cervix, or neck of the uterus. The uterus (centre) is a muscular, hollow organ in the walls of which the fertilized egg (female reproductive cell) embeds and in which the resulting embryo develops into a baby during pregnancy. Ovaries (centre left & right) release their eggs into feathery ducts which lead to the uterus through the Fallopian tubes. The ovary at left has developed a corpus luteum gland (flower- shaped) at the site of release of an egg. Hormones from this gland prepare the uterus for pregnancy.
