Sperm cells, computer artwork. Sperm are the male reproductive cells (gametes). They are produced in the testes, and around 300 million are released in every ejaculation. They contain genetic material in their rounded heads and propel themselves through the female reproductive tract by beating their long tails. Only one sperm cell may penetrate the much larger female egg cell (ovum, not seen).
