Skin. Light micrograph of a section through the skin from an armpit. The outermost layer is the epidermis (upper frame). It consists of a layer of dead, keratinised cells which are continuously shed and replaced by cells from the layer below it (dark pink). Beneath this layer is the dermis (pink) which contains elastic connective tissue. It also contains blood vessels, nerves and sweat glands. Sweat glands are tubular, unbranched coiled glands. The white areas at bottom are part of the fatty subcutaneous layer. Magnification: x15 at 6x7cm size.
