Kennedy Space Center. Satellite image of the VAB (Vehicle Assembly Building, white, lower centre), the Kennedy Space Center, Florida, USA. This is one of the largest buildings in the world. It is 160 metres high and could contain the volume of 4 Empire State Buildings. It was built from 1962 to 1965, originally to assemble the Saturn rockets for the Apollo Moon missions. It is now used to prepare the space shuttles and the booster rockets used to launch the shuttles. The smudges of colour on the side of the building are the NASA logo and US flag. Image taken by the Ikonos satellite on 15 October 2000, at about 10:30 in the morning.
