Yuri Gagarin. Artwork of the Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin (1934-1968) in his spacesuit. Gagarin was the first person in space. He was launched in Vostok 1 on 12 April 1961. He completed a single orbit around the Earth, in a trip lasting 108 minutes. Gagarin became a hero in the Soviet Union, and became famous all around the world. He was killed in a plane crash in 1968, while he was training to go back into space.
