Carbon-neutral building. This is the front of the Solar Fabrik AG solar module manufacturing plant. The building is Europe's first ever CO2-neutral solar module production facility. Solar modules on the facade (left) and the roof (not seen), cover a total area of 575 square metres. With a peak output of 56.5 kW (kilowatts) the modules supply 20% of the factory's electrical energy. The rest comes from a combined heat and power plant (CHP) fuelled by rapeseed oil. Since the carbon released in combustion was originally absorbed by the plants during growth, any net climate effect of using the oil as fuel is cancelled. The building was completed in 1998. Photographed in Freiburg, Germany.
