Nuclear waste storage. Remote handling of a flask containing nuclear waste. It is being placed in a water pond for storage at the Thermal Oxide Reprocessing Plant (THORP) at Sellafield in West Cumbria, UK. THORP reprocesses spent oxide fuel from nuclear reactors worldwide. On arrival the fuel assemblies are removed from the transport flasks and dismantled by remote control. The fuel pins are then stored underwater in cooling ponds to await reprocessing.
