AMADEUS (Advanced Manipulation for Deep Underwater Sampling) is a marine robot with arms that have been designed to retrieve samples from deep underwater. Delicate robotic systems have had to be designed to endure the crushing pressures found at depth in the sea. The arm weighs 65 kilograms, is 140 centimetres long, and is filled with oil, allowing it to reach a depth of 500 metres. It is able to handle heavy objects, fragile objects, and (together with the second arm) do manipulations such as screwing a cap onto a cylinder. AMADEUS was developed from 1996-1999 by Robotlab and the University of Genoa, Italy.
