Composite image of the Goldstone radio dish antenna and a star field. The dish seen here is 64 metres in diameter, and is used by NASA to communicate with spacecraft far from Earth. Notable programmes in the past include the Pioneer and Voyager missions to the outer planets. Goldstone, in California USA, is the home of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. The antenna is currently (early 1992) being used to support the Galileo project, a spacecraft being sent to Jupiter. In late 1992, the Goldstone dish will be used as part of the Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence (SETI) project, listening for a response to radio messages sent many years ago.
