Such chips can be used to study the communication between nerve cells, which gives a greater understanding of the workings of the brain. Such research could lead to new treatments for disorders and diseases of the brain, such as Alzheimer's or Parkinson's diseases. Such technology may also make it possible to attach computer chips directly to the brain to augment its functions.
