Falkirk Wheel. This is a type of lock that moves boats between the Union Canal (not seen) and the Forth & Clyde Canal (bottom centre). These canals, disused since the 1960s, originally had 11 locks over a distance of 1.5 kilometres, which connected the two waterways. The aerial extension to the Union Canal (upper right) along with the wheel were constructed as a rotating boat lift. The wheel consists of two gondolas, each able to lift 300 tonnes, that lift or lower boats the 35 metres between the two canals. Photographed in Falkirk, Scotland.
