The platform generates a 1-G force at the feet of a 1.7-metre-tall person, whose head is at the centre of rotation. This is equivalent to the gravitational force on earth. It is being developed as a way of preventing the space deconditioning caused by prolonged weightlessness, which affects personnel on long spaceflights. Deconditioning results in muscular wasting and bone demineralization. Regular use of the platform in space may combat these problems. The platform is being developed in the Man-Vehicle Laboratory at MIT, USA.
