Martian surface. Panoramic view of the Gusev Crater region of Mars taken by the Mars Exploration Rover Spirit. The field of view is nearly 180 degrees. It is a composite of images taken between 4th and 7th September 2005. Spirit landed on Mars on 4th January 2004 and has made many geological measurements of rocks and soil, and studied the Martian atmosphere. A twin rover, Opportunity, landed on the other side of the planet on 25th January 2004. This is a false- colour rendering of the scene. For a true-colour version of the same scene, see image R360/229.
