Jet from a young star. Visible light image of the Herbig-Haro object HH-30, a jet of gas about half a light year long, as seen by the Hubble Space Telescope. At the left is a dust cloud (green) which surrounds the young star. The star's light illuminates the upper and lower bounds of the dust. A jet of gas (red) is seen emitted from the centre of the cloud, probably by the young star itself along its rotational axis. The ejection of the gas jet may remove excess angular momentum, which would otherwise prevent further material accreting to the star. HH-30 is about 450 light years from Earth in the constellation Taurus.
