Elliptical galaxy NGC 1316, Hubble Space Telescope image. This giant galaxy has a large amount of dark dust silhouetted against it. The nature of the dust lanes, as well as studies of star clusters (not seen) in this galaxy, has led astronomers to deduce that it is the result of a collision between two spiral galaxies a few billion years ago. NGC 1316 lies in the Fornax Cluster of galaxies some 75 million light years away in the constellation Fornax. This image was taken in March 2003 by the Advanced Camera for Surveys on the HST.
