This sequence, by the British- American photographer Eadweard James Muybridge (1830-1904), is from an album of photographs taken in California, USA, from 1872-79. The action runs from right to left from the top right. Muybridge pioneered the use of high-speed photography and employed ingenious techniques to study animal and human locomotion. He began his work on high-speed photography when he was commissioned to discover whether galloping horses have all of their feet off the ground at certain times. He proved that they did.
