Unmyelinated nerve. Transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a section through axon (nerve fibre) bundles of unmyelinated nerves. Unmyelinated nerves do not have the myelin sheaths that wrap around the axons of myelinated nerves. This means the speed of nerve impulse conduction is slower, around 1 metre per second, in unmyelinated nerves compared with about 100 metre per second for myelinated nerves. Magnification: x22,000, when printed 10 centimetres wide.
