Small heat shock protein, molecular model. Heat shock proteins (HSPs) are a group of proteins whose levels increase when cells are exposed to raised temperatures or other stress. Small HSPs bind to proteins to prevent them from being denatured by heat. This protein is from the thermophile archaeon Methanococcus jannaschii. It consists of 24 units (monomers) forming a hollow sphere with octahedral symmetry.
