Sectional diagram of the Liverpool gasworks in 1861 which produced coal gas chiefly for domestic illumination. From the right, coal is burnt in retorts and the dense gas produced passes through a condensers and scrubbers during which the by-products of ammonia and tar are removed. After the gas is cleaned in a dry-lime purifier it is stored in the gasholder on the left prior to distribution.
