Foetal eye. Light micrograph of a section through the developing eye of a foetus. The developing fetal eye lies behind the growing eyelids which are yet to open. The growing lens dominates the eye and shows patterns of displacing cell nuclei of the lens fibres as these slowly multiply to add to the overall lens size. Covering the external side of the lens is the thin cornea. A growing chamber behind the lens will become the vitreous body, which is associated with the retina. Many photoreceptor nuclei (dark spots) can also be seen. Magnification: x180, when printed 10 centimetres high.
