Supermarine S.6B aircraft. This seaplane was developed by British aircraft manufacturer Supermarine for the 1931 Schneider Trophy competition. Testing was carried out in wind tunnels at the National Physical Laboratory, with flights at Southampton Water. This is aircraft S1596, which was flown by John N. Boothman on 13 September to win the trophy. This aircraft is now at the Science Museum, London. The experience gained with this aircraft led to the later Spitfire fighter aircraft, famed for its use during the Second World War. Both aircraft were designed by British aeronautical engineer Reginald Joseph Mitchell (1895-1937).
