It was developed by the Lockheed Corporation and made its maiden flight in August 1955. Since then, it has been used by the CIA and the US Air Force for high-altitude reconnaissance missions (altitudes of 21 kilometres). Over 80 U-2 aircraft have been built over more than 50 years.
