The human foot contains 26 bones. Seven of these form the tarsus (lower right, including the calcaneus, the heel bone). The lower leg bones (upper right) are the tibia (thicker bone) and the fibula. From the tarsus the five metatarsals of the foot join to the phalanges (toe bones). Major ligaments shown include the transverse crural ligament (strap, front of ankle).
