Blundell and Ramakrishnan. Portrait of the British molecular biologists Sir Thomas Leon Blundell (born 1942, left) and Venkatraman Venki Ramakrishnan (born 1952, right) talking. Blundell's research on identifying the chemical processes of diseases has led to the development of drugs to treat Aids, cancer, cataracts and diabetes. He is the co-founder of two drug discovery companies, Astex Technology Ltd and Biofabrika. Ramakrishnan shared the 2009 Nobel Prize in Chemistry with Thomas A. Steitz and Ada E. Yonath, for studies of the structure and function of the ribosome. He currently works at the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology in Cambridge, UK (as of 2013).
