Charles Davies Sherborn (1861-1942), British taxonomist, naturalist and geologist (also known as 'Squire'), working at his desk in the Natural History Museum, London, UK. This photograph shows him in around 1935 (aged 74). Sherborn's major work, compiled here from 1890 to 1933, was the 11-volume 'Index Animalium' (1902, 1922-32), a work of some 9000 pages that catalogued 440,000 animals (extinct and living) discovered between 1758 and 1850. After this, Sherborn worked on a biography of palaeontologist Richard Owen. Photograph from 'Squire: Memories of Charles Davies Sherborn' (1944) by John Roxborough Norman (1898-1944).
